Spending a little extra time outdoors to save ourselves from going crazy these last few weeks. I learned to cross-country ski, which was somewhat harrowing. I actually fell about 15 times more than when I've been learning to downhill ski. But it was beautiful out on the trail and quiet in that way that only snowy woods can be.
I'm appreciating the slow lengthening of the days. Not driving home in utter blackness really helps my moods. And a few warm and cheerful touches inside the house, combined with some outdoor activities (when the temperature isn't in the negatives), is keeping me sane.
Under a few inches of snow as I write this, and it's still falling. I've been here for a little more than a year, and heavy snowfalls still feel like magic to me.

I've always thought that cross-country skiing would be more fun because you don't fall. In my mind you are just gliding through the snow and able to zip here and zip there. So there is falling involved in this one too?

Yeah, that's what I thought too. Total lies. Here's the thing - it's REALLY hard to stop. You don't have the same type of control that you have in downhill skis, which is saying a lot because I feel completely out of control in downhill skis. I really didn't know how to stop, so the only way to do it was to fall. And I was by myself, so there was no one to help me figure out another way. But honestly, after talking with other people afterwards, that just seems to be how it goes if you're not super great at it. Also, I was on a really hilly area, so that didn't help.
DeleteThose olympic cross country skiers are so intimidating with their strength. The whole thing just looks beyond exhausting, which is why I guess I'm always in awe. Those pictures of Jammer are the absolute cutest! Makes me want to take a trip up north! Stay safe during Nemo!!
ReplyDeleteCome on up! :)
DeleteI know what you mean about heavy snowfalls. I've lived in DC for 8 years now, and while DC isn't the true north, it does get more seasons than my home-state of Florida. I've been aching for a really good, heavy snowfall. So far we've had 5 dustings - all of which are pretty, but there's something comforting and intense weather.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got a chance to venture outside and enjoy the snow! I'll be here in my sweatshirt staying warm :)
I'll be praying for some big snow for you guys. Also, I'm sure a day off from school would be nice!
DeletePopped over to visit after reading on BlogHer. Your pup is just precious. The joy captured in your pictures is wonderful. The blizzard hit here too, and so we sent the weekend shoveling out 29 inches of snow. I took out the movie Nemo and watched it while it raged outside, yep, I am a bit quirky! Glad I found your blog!
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping over, Winnie! 29 inches! That's insane. I don't think I've ever been in that much snow. I hope you had fun - of course, any day with Nemo is a good day. :) Just keep swimming Just keep swimming!
DeleteI love Jammer's sort-of glare at the other dog -- it's like he's saying "We might be able to be friends. I'm considering it. But you look like you might be a yappy dog, so I'm not sure yet."
ReplyDeleteWhat does the "Survey Marker" sign mean? And don't let Andy near the chocolate chip container -- he will eat them before you have a chance to blink :)
